Content Management
An important component of every network is a content and it’s management. Most of the households still do not manage their multimedia activities centrally. Traditional way, is to access different media using various hardware devices such as outlined as follows:

TV is normally provided through cable or satellite providers. Many people get extra cable boxes to watch TV in other rooms in the house.

Movies are normally watched on DVD players connected to the TV or an entertainment system. Latest trend is to download movies to the computer, burn it to the CD or DVD, and watch it traditional way on the TV. In order to be able to watch movies on other TVs, people have to get a separate DVD player.

Music, similar to Movies is played on various devices, however, more and more people are downloading music these days through the internet directly to the PCs, and then uploading them into their MP3 players, smart-phones, etc.

Photos, given such a vide use of digital cameras, are digitalized the most. They are primarily stored on computer hard drives.

Internet, is mainly available through using computers.
These are just a few examples of how majority of people manage their multimedia needs. Traditional approach is to purchase different hardware devices in order to enjoy certain media content. That is because new technologies emerged gradually, and people adapted to those over time.
Even using a computer to access internet, watch pictures, movies, etc. is not the ideal platform. Originally, the main purpose of the computers was to be used for programming, writing, calculation, etc. Only with availability of new applications, such as games, internet, digital photography, and digital music, computers have lately been used as the only standard device to perform all of those multimedia/entertainment activities.
However, the increasing trend is to use computer only in the background, to store multimedia files, operate and control the rest of devices in the network. There will be no need to sit in front of the computer to browse the internet. Same can be achieved by accessing internet via HDTV using wireless keyboard or voice commands.
